Virtual reality is the place to be and Samsung is diving in headfirst. The company has already created its first VR headset and is now working to bolster the ecosystem. Samsung has previously supported programs to aid the development of virtual reality software, but the company is beginning a new program called Samsung Creators, which aims to assist storytellers in using VR. Samsung Creators will offer training and seminars at major events such as VidCon, giving some of the internet’s largest storytellers access to VR.
We want to bring the power of VR technology directly to the people. To help creators learn and perfect the art of VR storytelling, we’ve built an entire VR ecosystem that pushes beyond the frame and empowers them to develop unforgettable, immersive stories, and inspires us all to do the same.Marc MathieuSamsung
In addition to Samsung Creators, Samsung is also rebranding Samsung Milk VR as Samsung VR. This rebranding comes with a major change, with the service now offering support for user-generated content. Users can now capture 360-degree video and upload it to Samsung VR, with the content being available to view through the Gear VR.
To complement the user-generated content support in Samsung VR, the company is also launching the Gear 360 in the US. Samsung’s Gear 360 is a portable 360-degree camera that uses two 180-degree cameras to simultaneously capture content from all angles. Users can edit and share the video directly from their Galaxy S7 or a PC. While 360-degree video is now supported on major platforms such as YouTube, it’s most stunning when experienced through a virtual reality headset, which allows you to naturally view the scenes unfolding.
The Gear 360 is priced at $349.99 and will be available for purchase in limited amounts to attendees at VidCon. Samsung will provide info on wider availability at a later date.
