TBT - 40th anniversary of the Walkman, the device that changed music

Nokia 9 PureView teased for India launch happening soon

The Nokia 9 PureView definitely isn't a very new smartphone anymore, what with it having hit the streets for the first time in February. Still, this many months later, it's nowhere to be found in India. The launch in the subcontinent seemed imminent in early May, but for some reason it hasn't happened.

This time, though... this time it really is coming soon! The official Nokia Mobile India Twitter account says so, so it must be true. Here's a teaser that's recently been posted:

"The power of 5" sounds nice and all, but what would have been nicer is for this phone to actually have been released in India earlier, without letting more than four months pass after its first global outing. Better late than never? What do you think?

Trollaby Attaches to Luggage to Allow Users to Rest Anywhere

Marc Brugger, an Australian-based entrepreneur, recently launched a sleep-enabling luggage accessory aptly named Trollaby. Brugger was frustrated with last-minute flight cancellations that required individuals to pay and book a hotel, or individuals seeking privacy in-between flights -- thus Trollaby was created.

The sleep-enabling luggage accessory attaches to suitcases with a comfortable matt and light-blocking overhead tent. The Trollaby is compact and can be easily packed away into a laptop compartment. In addition, the product can be combined with other Trollabys for a larger sleeping space. The device measures 1 meter long and 69 cm wide, with a height of 50-60 cm.

This innovative product is ideal for families, couples, and friends who are looking for comfort and privacy while traveling.

The U.S. ban on Huawei has negative impact on Samsung’s business

It’s interesting how in the world of technology limes are blurring and companies are competing in one segment, and depend on each-other in another. According to recent reports citing analyst predictions, a direct effect of the U.S. ban on Huawei will have a rather negative impact on Samsung’s chip business.

Samsung is the world’s first smartphone manufacturer and largest supplier of DRAM and NAND memory chips. Interestingly, one of its most important clients is the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer — with plans to dethrone Samsung — and a drop in memory chip shipments to Huawei leaves a scar on Samsung’s chip business.

The quarterly result would be the South Korean firm’s lowest in nearly three years, with the prospect of an earnings recovery still some quarters away as a period of oversupply continues unabated amid a broader slowdown in tech markets — analyst cited by CNBC

According to Refinitiv SmartEstimate, on Friday, when Samsung is set to reveal its second-quarter results, the company will announce a 60% decline in April-June operating profit at 6 trillion won ($5.14 billion). The estimation comes from 29 analysts and they all seem to agree, more or less, that Huawei, and the U.S. ban imposed upon the company is the culprit.

The Police Officer Who "Froze" For 5 Minutes In A Hallway During The Las Vegas Massacre Has Been Fired

A Las Vegas police officer who "froze" in the middle of a hotel hallway while a gunman rained bullets on the Route 91 Harvest festival, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more in the 2017 massacre, has been fired, officials confirmed Wednesday.

For nearly five minutes, body camera footage showed Officer Cordell Hendrex and security staff at Mandalay Bay taking cover in a hallway as the gunman continued firing on concertgoers. According to police, the gunman fired hundreds of rounds in a span of 10 minutes.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police confirmed Hendrex was terminated from his position with the department on March 20 "for performance of his duties."

The decision came nearly a year and a half after the Oct. 1, 2017 massacre that marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Steven Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, confirmed Hendrex was fired over his decision to remain in the hallway, but called the termination "political cover" for the department since the decision didn't come until the body camera video was released publicly and brought media attention.

"(The department) knew about the video and his statements long before they went through the process to fire him," Grammas said.

In body camera footage released last year, Hendrex and hotel security were seen walking through a hotel hallway with handguns drawn as hundreds of shots ring out.

"Holy shit, that's rapid fire," someone was heard saying.

"Oh my God!" Hendrex replied.

In the video, Hendrex radios his location to dispatch officers, informing them that the source of the gunfire was coming from the floor above them. The group of officers was seen headed toward a stairway until one said, "back the fuck up" and, instead, take cover near dears to hotel suites.

In his incident report, Hendrex wrote that he had been "terrified with fear," the moment he heard what was believed to have been automatic gunfire.

"I know I hesitated and I remember being terrified with fear and I think that I froze right there in the middle of the hall for how long I can't say," he wrote, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported at the time.

Hendrex was accompanied by an officer trainee on his first day with the police department, Grammas said.

As the group waited in the hallway, police officers throughout the area were heard reporting multiple shooting victims at the festival.

Hendrex had been with the department for 12 years. Grammas said the police union opposed his firing and would be backing the officer in arbitration with the department.

"Our board was on his side when looking at the totality of the event," he said. "He couldn't have gone into that room with just himself and his trainee."

"It wasn't until it got media attention that they relieved him of duty," Grammas said.

Before his firing in March, he said, Hendrex continued to be assigned to the field and was supervising trainees.

Hendrex's attorney representing him in arbitration could not be immediately reached for comment.

US Cyber Command warns of nation-state hackers exploiting Outlook

The recent surge in state-backed hacking campaigns isn't dying down any time soon. US Cyber Command has reported that unnamed state actors are making "active malicious use" of a 2017-era Outlook vulnerability (long since patched) to escape the email client's sandbox and run malware on a target system. While officials didn't say who was involved, some clues have hinted at a possible connection to Iran.

ZDNet noted that a known Iran-backed hacking team, APT33, had used the same vulnerability in December to install back doors on servers and promptly push the flaw to Outlook users. Chronicle Security's Brandon Levene also found that Cyber Command's code samples appeared related to APT33's disk-wiping Shamoon malware. Symantec had also warned of increased activity from the group in recent months.

If it's Iran and not a more familiar perpetrator like Russia, it suggests that political tensions are translating directly to the digital realm. The US is believed to have knocked out Iranian missile and rocket systems with a cyberattack in late June, for instance. Although this Outlook campaign isn't necessarily direct retaliation for the missile effort, it's hard to imagine Iran doing nothing in response.
