Apple launched iMessage to work on iOS and OS X, the company’s mobile and desktop operating systems, respectively. But the app could be expanding.
According to a report from MacDailyNews, which cites an unnamed source “familiar with the company’s thinking,” Apple has plans to launch iMessage for Android sometime in 2016. As it stands right now, Apple is reportedly going to announce iMessage for Android at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which is set to kick off on June 13.
The source also told the publication that the plans are constantly in flux and Apple may not actually make the announcement next week at all. Event if there is no announcement next week, though, the source says that Apple will “definitely” launch iMessage in 2016.
Apple used to be against any type of software being available for Android, but that changed with the launch of Apple Music‘s official Android app, so it seems at least possible that an Android version of iMessage could be in the works. If it does launch, it would be another messaging app for Android that offers end-to-end encryption, real-time chat, read receipts, and other features.
Would you use iMessage for Android?
