Meet the processor that’s going to power many of the flagship Android smartphones in 2019.
Qualcomm today took the wraps off of the Snapdragon 855, its newest flagship mobile chipset. While the company didn’t spill a ton of details on the Snapdragon 855 today, it did say that the chipset offers three times better performance than the Snapdragon 845.
We also know that the Snapdragon 855 offers support for 5G connectivity. Specifically, it’ll offer multi-gigabit 5G in addition to 4G LTE support, says Qualcomm. There’s a computer vision ISP (image signal processor) for better photography in there, too, as well as a fourth generation AI engine.
Qualcomm is currently hosting its Snapdragon Summit, so expect more details on the Snapdragon 855 to be revealed in the coming days. The chipset is shaping up to be a pretty big deal, though, because not only will it very likely be inside many of the most hotly anticipated phones of 2019, but it’ll also enable 5G connectivity for the first wave of 5G smartphones. Safe to say we’re looking forward to getting our first Snapdragon 855 devices in hand and seeing what Qualcomm’s flagship chipset can do.
In addition to its announcement of the Snapdragon 855, Qualcomm today introduced the 3D Sonic Sensor. This is an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader that Qualcomm says will read your fingerprint even if its wet or oily. Snapdragon Elite Gaming, which includes Qualcomm working with top gaming companies to tune the Snapdragon mobile gaming experience.
