This Is the IRS, We’d Like to Talk to Your Horrible Accountant

We (should) tell clients who feel they can “do it themselves” that they can’t, or they would have done it already. Marshall Goldsmith and I point out in our work (and our book, Lifestorming) that if people can’t get something done in about 30 days then they are not going to get it done (well) without help, period.

Why, then, do consultants and those in related fields attempt to do their own taxes, apply for their own trademarks, take their own promotional videos, and even choose their own image? If we pushback on our clients for similar self-delusion, whey do we engage in it?

Usually, it’s because of a scarcity mentality, telling us we can save money, or it’s the protection of our egos from someone telling us the outfit or the hair just don’t work. (I watched one woman speak on stage with glasses perched on top of her head, and a man visit a client with a hair color that does not exist in nature.)

If you’re truly an expert, then accept expert help yourself. Walk the talk, talk the walk.
