I’ve explained to clients for a long time that they only have 100% of time and energy and talent. When someone grandiosely calls for “110%” I have no idea what’s meant.
Consequently, the question is where those resources and priorities are applied. In the best of my clients, about 90% went toward the customer, the relationship, the business nurturing and growth. Ten percent went to internal politics, gossip, turf battles, and who had which office. But in other clients when I arrived, it was often 50/50 or worse (announce a layoff and it becomes 99/1 the wrong way). And these buyers would ask me why the organization isn’t more productive!
Where is the US government right now? Is it focused on improving our society and well-being in health, finances, infrastructure, safety, and so forth? Or is it focused on internal struggles about power and ego?
I don’t feel as if I’m getting even 10% of these people’s attention as a citizen.
