In 2018, the average rent for a one-bedroom across the US was $1,140. So we wanted to find out: How do some major cities across the country fare?

All average monthly rents listed are for a one-bedroom, per Rent.com's "2019 National Apartment Rent Price Analysis." I repeat: The below prices are for average monthly rent in each city, which means that while super-central luxury one-bedrooms may skew that number a bit in many markets, you can also find housing further away from the city center — or places that haven't had brand-new renovations — for a more bargain-friendly price. It's totally feasible, for example, to find a lovely, livable one-bedroom in New York City (I see you, Queens!) for half the average reported rent of $4,164, and same goes for San Francisco and Boston. For the sake of consistency, we stuck with the data pulled by the same source over the same time period.
Either way you slice it...you should seriously be considering whether a move to Indianapolis or San Antonio is worth the cost of living!
