Xiaomi president teases phone with 48-megapixel camera

Xiaomi’s no stranger to creating crazy phones. The company has made a wide range of devices with outlandish specs, and its next phone looks to be no different. Xiaomi president Lin Bin has teased an upcoming smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera, saying that it will be “released in January.” While we don’t know much, the picture shows a smartphone camera that protrudes from the body along with a flash and text that reads, “48 MP Camera.”

While other device makers have focused on adding multiple rear cameras (Samsung’s Galaxy A9 has four), Xiaomi is going after resolution. We’re curious to see how the camera will actually perform. If there’s any lesson we’ve learned in the past few years, it’s that adding more megapixels doesn’t necessarily equate to a better camera. Regardless, Xiaomi may wow us all with a smartphone camera that knocks the socks off the stiff competition.

Would you buy a smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera?
