Samsung want to put a 1/1.7-inch camera sensor in its smartphones

It’s no secret that Samsung wants its smartphones to offer the best imaging experience possible. Right now, the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are the best smartphone cameras currently on the market. But Samsung isn’t planning on sitting back to see how long it can drag things out with the current generation of devices. The latest Samsung rumor claims that the company is working on internal shifts, moving employees from its NX camera team to the smartphone team to work on a new 1/2.3-inch sensor which will be paired with an f/1.4 aperture lens. On its own, the f/1.4 aperture lens would allow 17% more light to pass through to the sensor. That’s without considering that the 1/2.3-inch sensor would allow for larger pixels than the 1/2.5-inch sensor that’s currently being used in the Galaxy S7.

What’s even more interesting is that the end goal for Samsung is a 1/1.7-inch camera sensor with a megapixel count ranging from 18 to 24. At that size, the sensor would still be less than a quarter the size of the sensors used inside micro 4/3 cameras these days, but  dramatically larger than what any of us will be getting in a 2016 flagship smartphone.

Naturally, the rumor did not include any details regarding how long we will need to wait for the two different imaging sensors to show up. We imaging the 1/2.3-inch sensor could be introduced sometime in 2017, but we’ll likely have to wait 2-3 years before the 1/1.7-inch camera sensor comes to market.
