Remember the Vivo Nex? This device was officially unveiled back in June, and one of its highlight features was that it had a front-facing camera that popped up from the body, letting Vivo avoid using a notch on its display. Now Vivo is back with its new Nex phone and a new idea for avoiding the notch.
The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition is pretty much what it sounds like. This new device has two AMOLED displays, one on the front and one on the back, and no front-facing camera. Instead, the triple camera setup on the back of the phone for your selfies, and the secondary display is there to help your framing.
The front display on the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition is a 6.39-inch 2340×1080 AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint reader for added security. Because there’s no need for a notch or bezel for a front-facing camera, Vivo touts that it was able to slim the bezels down to get a 91.63 percent screen-to-body ratio . Around on the back of the phone is the secondary screen that measures 5.49 inches and has a resolution of 1920×1080. In addition to being used for framing selfies, you can utilize this secondary screen as a touchpad for mobile gaming.
The triple rear camera setup above that rear display includes a 12MP Dual Pixel Camera with Sony IMX363 sensor and optical image stabilization. There’s also a secondary 2MP Night Vision Camera that’ll help capture clear footage in low light, and a Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Camera that uses 3D sensing capabilities for point-to-point distance measuring, facial recognition, and what Vivo calls “personalized beautification”.
Surrounding those three cameras is a feature called the Lunar Ring. This glowing band can show different colors for incoming notifications and can also pulse with music. And when you’re taking a selfie, the Lunar Ring can be used to add a soft light to your photo.
When it comes to other specs, Vivo has included some high-end features to back up its dual display gimmick. There’s a Snapdragon 845 processor inside the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition along with 10GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. A 3500mAh battery is powering the whole package, and you’ll recharge that battery using USB-C.
The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition will launch in China on December 29 for 4,998 yuan ($724 USD). There’s no word yet on when or if it’ll be released in other parts of the globe.
While Vivo’s new phone isn’t the first handset to have dual displays, it’s not exactly something we see often in the smartphone world. Having an AMOLED screen on both sides of your phone looks pretty cool, and it’s a unique way for Vivo to avoid embracing the notch while also skipping a pop-out camera mechanism, which some might be worried about eventually failing.
What do you think of the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition?
